    The Client

The Palm Jumeirah is an impressive manmade archipelago in Dubai, created using land reclamation and extending into the Persian Gulf. The tree-shaped island is known for its five-star hotels, luxury apartment towers and upmarket global restaurants.

The Palm Jumeirah Boardwalk is an 11-kilometre coastal path built along the breakwater. The boardwalk features beautiful views of the Arabian Gulf as well as Dubai’s iconic skyline and sits at the heart of one of Dubai’s most desirable neighbourhoods, running past the iconic Atlantis Hotel and other prime attractions.

It is busy at all hours, with refreshments, souvenir concessions and food vendors selling local cuisine throughout the day. Future development includes new retail promenades and piers which will stretch over 100 meters out to sea for spectacular views.

    The Challenge

The client had identified the boardwalk as vulnerable due to it being a crowded space and being located directly next to one of the archipelago’s main roads. A crash-rated solution was required to keep pedestrian traffic safe from vehicles.

Security bollards on dubai's palm jumeirah boardwalk

    The Objective

Given the high-profile nature of the resort, its hotels and their international VIP clientele, any security bollards installed would need to be resistant to both accidental crashes and higher-speed vehicle-as-a-weapon attacks.

While the solution had to provide a high level of protection, it also had to fit in with its surroundings, and deliver a modern, attractive aesthetic to match the prestigious location.

    The Solution

ATG Access chose crash-tested shallow-mount bollards to secure the boardwalk perimeter. This solution protects against vehicle-as-a-weapon attacks; the perimeter was protected with impact test certified bollards.

Shallow mount technology avoids huge excavation of an area as bollards are mounted to a steel plate which is only 112mm in depth. It also allows products to be connected prior to delivery on-site – an ideal solution for busy public spaces such as tourist sites.

Together, this enabled the ATG team to deliver a very quick and efficient installation that minimised disruption for local residents, tourists and visitors.

Part of the boardwalk installation covered the front of the Atlantis hotel – as tourists gather to photograph this opulent structure, ATG protects the crowds.

For this prestigious section of the boardwalk, the client asked for an aesthetic sleeve to be added to the impact-tested steel bollard cores. This is a common requirement for our clients and we offer a range of designs and styles to match our solutions to their surroundings.

In this instance, the bollards featured a stainless steel exterior, in keeping with the modern aesthetic of the location. Nakheel Developments also chose to brand the top of each bollard with its company logo.

    The Results

ATG worked very closely with KTC – the contractor – and Nakheel Developments – the end-user – to ensure the design of the bollards was to their specification and to project manage the installation of the products. The project was delivered on time and on budget, and the client was happy with the solution.
