With vehicle theft on the rise, a driveway security bollard is a great way to protect your vehicles from thieves, acting as a visible deterrent and making it harder for someone to make off with your motor!
However, knowing what the right security bollard to choose can be difficult.

With a wide range of options available and different choices suiting different needs, our team have put together a simple overview of our main options to help you choose the bollard that fits your requirements.

Removable vs Telescopic Bollards: What should you choose?

First, we need to explain the differences between the two.

Removable bollards are designed to be completely taken out of the ground by the user. Thanks to a shallower depth of foundation than telescopic bollards, removable options are well suited to areas with a high water table. Bollards with deeper foundations could be affected by water during seasonal water changes, so it’s well worth considering your local environment when choosing a bollard.

Removable bollards are not available with any mechanical lift-assist option (a feature on some telescopic bollards which makes them easier to lift), but all removable bollards from ATG Access feature an easy-to-use demountable design for quick removal and locking/unlocking.

However, due to being removed – rather than permanently affixed to the ground like a telescopic bollard – a removable bollard also needs to be securely stored when not in use, both to prevent damage and to stop someone from stealing the bollard itself.

Telescopic bollards, (sometimes known as retractable bollards) slide in and out of the ground but remain fixed to the foundation. A wide selection of ATG telescopic bollards come with lift-assist options which use a mechanical process to make sure that lifting the bollards out of the ground is as easy as possible. With lift assist, heavier bollards feel lighter to lift, meaning that you can get a more imposing, visually impressive deterrent without having to struggle with the weight.

While our bollards are designed to be as easy to lift as possible, we have created lift-assist options to ensure that our bollards are accessible for all, regardless of mobility, age, or upper body strength.

What are the best lightweight bollards?

The most important usability considerations to take into account for driveway security bollards are the lift weight and the height above ground. While you can be confident our bollards offer great security (all ATG Access telescopic and removable bollards are “insurance recommended” and come with Sold Secure Gold locks for added protection), knowing that you can use your bollard is the most important piece of information.

It’s also worth considering the height above ground when it comes to choosing the right bollard for your driveway or parking space. For vehicles with a higher wheelbase – think SUVs or trucks – a 670mm height-above-ground bollard might be difficult to see while reversing, so a 900mm height-above-ground option might be more appropriate.

For users concerned about weight and usability, we’ve compiled a top six of lightweight bollards for both safety and ease of use, with five of our top six being telescopic, or retractable, bollards.

    6. 168 900 Telescopic Bollard – 9-10kg

The 168 900 Telescopic bollard is our largest non-impact tested model, offering a visually challenging deterrent for thieves. The 168mm diameter and 900mm above-ground height offer an imposing sight, but with lift-assist technology, the 168 900 Telescopic bollard comes in at only 9-10kg, making it among the lighter options for a heavy-duty security bollard for your driveway.

    5. 114 670 Removable Bollard – 9-10kg

Our lightest removable bollard, the 114 670 Removable bollard provides an easy option for those in areas with a high water table. With 3.2mm wall thickness, the 114 670 Removable bollard is easily removable and perfect for sites where a telescopic bollard isn’t viable. The stainless-steel finish also provides a sleek option for when aesthetics are key.

    4. 114 900 Telescopic Bollard – 7-8kg

The 114 900 Telescopic bollard is one of our tallest above-ground options, at 900mm above the ground. Despite this, with lift-assist, it comes in at only 7-8kg lift weight, making it one of the best options for a tall, easy-to-lift security bollard for your driveway. The extra height gives the 114 900 Telescopic bollard increased presence for improved visibility, helping to keep your property safe.

    3. 114 670 Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Telescopic Bollard – 7kg

At just 7kg lifting weight thanks to lift-assist technology, the 114 670 Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Telescopic bollard comes in at the same lifting weight as the 90 Square Lift-Assist Telescopic bollard. Also with reflective yellow bands and with lift-assist, the 114 670 Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Telescopic bollard is one of the best for ease of use.

    2. 90 Square Lift-Assist Telescopic Bollard – 7kg

With a lift weight of 7 kilograms, the 90 Square Lift-Assist Telescopic bollard is the joint-second lightest bollard available at ATG Access. Also with a moulded handle for easy grip when lifting and with two reflective yellow bands as standard, the 90 Square Lift-Assist Telescopic bollard edges similar bollards, making it marginally better than other bollards of the same weight.

    1. 114 670 Deterrent Telescopic Bollard – 6-7kg

The 114 670 Deterrent Telescopic bollard is the best bollard for those who might struggle with lifting heavier objects, with a moulded handle for ease of access. The 114 670 Deterrent Telescopic bollard stands 670mm above the ground, making it easy for anyone to lift. Even without lift-assist technology, the 114 670 Deterrent Telescopic bollard only has a lifting weight of 6 or 7 kilograms, making it the lightest telescopic bollard without lift-assist.
